The Ultra Red Rock Flower Anemone, Phymanthus crucifer, is a member of the Actiniidae family and is found in the western Atlantic Ocean, from the coast of North Carolina to Brazil. In the wild, these anemones are typically found in rocky areas with strong water currents, where they can anchor themselves firmly to the substrate and capture passing prey with their tentacles.
Rock Flower Anemones are celebrated for their intricate frills and vibrant, multicolored bodies displaying diverse patterns and textures. These captivating organisms engage in symbiotic relationships with small marine invertebrates such as Sexy Shrimp, Porcelain Crabs, and Anemone Shrimp, forming a visually striking partnership.
Adaptable to varying lighting intensities, Rock Flower Anemones thrive under moderate lighting for optimal well-being. While inherently adaptable, maintaining stable water parameters without significant fluctuations is imperative for their overall happiness and health.
Contrary to the common perception of anemones as "high risk" due to their wandering and stinging tendencies, Rock Flower Anemones can establish themselves seamlessly and harmlessly when strategically placed. The proper placement involves gentle positioning on the sandbed or a rock structure, with the option of creating a designated rock island to prevent unwanted movements.
During the introduction of a Rock Flower Anemone, it is recommended to temporarily pause water flow, allowing the creature to settle for approximately 15-20 minutes before resuming regular water movement. These anemones exhibit adaptability to various flow conditions, with moderate flow optimizing their short tentacles for efficient food capture from the water column. To promote robust health and accelerated growth, targeted feeding with meaty foods such as shrimp, Mysis, or small pellets 1-2 times a week is advisable.
Rock Flower Anemones serve as an excellent starting point for enthusiasts new to anemones, providing an opportunity to introduce vibrant colors to reef tanks. Their suitability for both novice and experienced hobbyists underscores their appeal as a versatile and visually striking choice for aquariums of all levels.
