Sarcophyton is a hardy, easy to care for coral that can be found in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Sarcophyton corals are commonly known as Toadstools or Mushroom Toadstool corals because their appearance is much like a mushroom with it's distinct stalk and cap. As they mature, Sarcophyton Corals develop a ruffled, folded appearance. Our Toadstool frags are the long polyp variety.
Toadstool corals are typically found at depths of 50 to 100 feet and prefer a temperature between 72°F and 80°F (22-28 °C). Although they can adapt to poor water conditions, Toadstools should be kept in pristine condition for the best coloration. They consume zooplankton in the wild but will also accept prepared coral foods after acclimating them to aquarium life. Sarcophytons have been known to propagate on their own by breaking off a piece from their base that is capable of growing into an entirely new individual over time.
The long-polyp variety has large, star-like tentacles that give it its common name. They prefer a moderate to high flow rate and can be kept in low or high light levels. They are extremely easy to care for and can be kept with other frags, but they may need more room than what is available in most nano tanks.
Most varieties of toadstool coral are hardy and the long-polyp variety is highly forgiving if conditions aren't perfect. They can be kept with other corals, but should have plenty of room to grow. Toadstool corals are a great addition to any reef tank and make an excellent beginner coral.
